Today we celebrate Independence Day in The United States of America. It’s a day to remember our freedom and honor those who daily accept the challenge of defending that freedom. Many of the years of my life I have focused on the cookouts, pool parties, fireworks, parades, and other festivities of the day and don’t think about what the day truly means. Two hundred and thirty seven years ago the Declaration of Independence was signed, declaring our freedom from England. A group of people decided to break away from the mother country, travel across the ocean, and start over in an unknown land. They sought personal and religious freedom. I know we all learn about the Declaration of Independence, the founding fathers, and Independence Day in elementary school, but then what? I know I haven't read any of the Declaration since it was required of me. As the world and our country is ever changing I am going to review The Declaration of Independence and pray that our government officials do the same and evaluate if their decisions reflect the foundation upon which this wonderful country was founded.
Thank you to those who have and are currently serving to protect our freedom! Happy Birthday America!
